How to Choose the Right Abaya Size

Sizing is what people get wrong most often when they buy an abaya online, and it is the one mistake that cannot be corrected afterwards. A dress that is slightly loose still works. An abaya that is two inches too short does not, and there is no hem to let down.

Length is the measurement that matters

Width is forgiving on an abaya. The cut is loose by design, so a size up or down usually still hangs correctly. Length is not forgiving at all.

Measure from the top of your shoulder, straight down to the floor, while wearing the shoes you would normally wear with it. That number is what you compare against the length on the product page. Add nothing for heels unless you actually wear them, and do not measure from the neck — it will read short by a couple of inches and you will order the wrong one.

If you are between two lengths, take the longer one. An abaya that just brushes the floor looks intentional. One that stops at the ankle looks like it shrank.

What free size actually means

Some sellers here list free size, others list S to XL. Free size does not mean it fits everyone — it means the seller cut one width, usually generous, and one length, usually around 54 to 58 inches. If you are notably tall or petite, free size is the listing to be careful with, because the length is fixed even though the width is not.

Where a seller gives S to XL, the sizes normally change length as well as width. Read both numbers rather than picking the size you take in a kurta.

Sleeves

Sleeve length is the second thing to check and the second thing people forget. Most abayas here are cut long, on the assumption you want full coverage at the wrist when your arm is extended, not when it is resting. Raise your arm in front of you and measure from shoulder to wrist in that position — that is the length you actually need.

Cut changes how a size feels

Two abayas listed at the same size will not feel the same if they are cut differently.

• Front-pleated A-line is fuller through the body and falls away from you. It is the most forgiving cut if you are unsure.
• Closed straight cuts sit closer. Take the more generous size if you are between two.
• Open front is the most flexible of all, because it hangs open and is not doing the work of fitting you.
