Skincare Routine for Oily & Acne-Prone Skin
Oily skin in humid weather needs fewer products, not more. A four-step morning and night routine, what to avoid, and when to see a dermatologist instead.
Oily, breakout-prone skin is hard work in Pakistan. Humidity in Karachi, dust in Lahore, and months of heat everywhere mean shine by midday and clogged pores by the evening. The usual reaction is to wash more, scrub harder and pile on products. That almost always makes it worse.
What works is a short routine done consistently. Four steps in the morning, three at night.
Why washing more backfires
Stripping oil off your face does not stop your skin producing it. Wash too often or with something too harsh and the skin barrier gets irritated, redness goes up, and breakouts often follow. If your face feels squeaky or tight after washing, the cleanser is too strong or you are using it too often.
Twice a day is enough. A third wash after the gym or a long day outside is fine; five is not.
Morning routine
1. Cleanse
Use a gel or foaming face wash for oily or acne-prone skin, with lukewarm water — not hot. Massage for about 30 to 60 seconds, rinse, and pat dry rather than rubbing. A tea tree or anti-acne face wash is a good fit here.
2. Treat
A few drops of niacinamide serum. For oily skin it is the most useful single step: it helps regulate oil, makes pores look smaller and calms redness, and it is gentle enough to use every day. If you have active spots, an anti-acne serum on the affected areas is the alternative.
3. Moisturise
This is the step oily skin skips, and it should not. Skin that is short of water often produces more oil to compensate. Choose something light — a gel texture rather than a heavy cream. A rose gel that sinks in quickly works well in summer.
4. Sunscreen
Every morning, including cloudy days and days you are mostly indoors near a window. Sun makes post-acne marks darker and slower to fade, so skipping sunscreen quietly undoes everything else. Look for a lightweight, non-greasy, broad-spectrum formula, and reapply if you are outside for long.
Night routine
- Cleanse — the same face wash. If you wear makeup or heavy sunscreen, wash twice.
- Treat — niacinamide again, or vitamin C serum if your concern is dullness and dark marks rather than active breakouts.
- Moisturise — the same light gel.
Once or twice a week
A clay or mud mask helps absorb excess oil. Mud with kojic acid powder can be mixed with rose water into a paste, left for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinsed.
A gel mask is the gentler option on nights your skin feels irritated.
A peel-off mask can help with blackheads on the nose and chin, but keep it away from active, inflamed spots and never peel it off before it has fully dried.
Rose water can be used as a light toner after cleansing on any day.
What to avoid
- Scrubs on active acne. Rubbing grainy exfoliants over inflamed spots spreads irritation and can leave marks. Save scrubs for clear areas, and never more than twice a week.
- Picking and squeezing. It is the fastest route to a dark mark that lasts months longer than the spot would have.
- Starting everything at once. Add one new product at a time and give it two weeks. If your skin reacts, you will know what caused it.
- Skipping the patch test. Try anything new on the inner arm or behind the ear for 24 hours first.
- Heavy oils and thick creams on the face in summer, if you are prone to breakouts.
How long before it works?
Give a routine six to eight weeks before judging it. Skin renews slowly, and most people give up on a routine just before it starts to show. Take a photo in the same light on day one; it is easier to see progress that way than in the mirror each morning.
When to see a dermatologist
Skincare from a shop is for mild to moderate breakouts. See a dermatologist if your acne is deep, painful or cystic, if it is leaving scars, if nothing has improved after two or three months of a consistent routine, or if it is affecting how you feel about yourself. Prescription treatment exists for exactly these cases, and it works far better than any face wash.
The routine on a single card
Morning: face wash → niacinamide → light gel moisturiser → sunscreen.
Night: face wash → niacinamide or vitamin C → light gel moisturiser.
Weekly: one clay mask, and a gel mask if your skin feels irritated.
